Working through conversation, interviews, and deep listening, we translate your voice, memories, and experiences into a fully written manuscript that sounds unmistakably like you. We do this most often for legacy memoirs, where getting the voice right is as important as the story itself.
Cookbooks, games, and instructional guides share a challenge that narrative books don't: the words have to do something. A recipe must be followed. Game rules must land on the first read. We write functional content with the same care we bring to every other kind, because a beautiful book that doesn't work isn't finished.
Developmental editing examines the whole before it touches the parts — your manuscript's structure, pacing, arc, and clarity of intent. For a legacy memoir, that might mean finding the through line in decades of lived experience. For a poetry collection, it means considering the tension and order between poems as carefully as the poems themselves.
For clients who want more than notes and revisions to act on themselves, we also offer narrative editing: a full manuscript rewrite in your voice, based on your existing material. It is ghostwriting for a story that is already on the page but needs a skilled writer to bring it fully to life.
Copyediting brings your manuscript to publication readiness at the sentence level, addressing grammar, syntax, consistency, and word choice. Visually complex books—those with captions, recipe components, poetry formatted to the line, or illustrated spread—require particular attention to consistency across every element on the page. We work from a custom style sheet so every choice is intentional from first page to last.
The final read before your book goes to print. Proofreading catches what everything else misses: the typo that survived three drafts, the caption that lost its period, the line break that shifted in layout. In books where the relationship between text and image is essential, this stage is where that relationship gets its final check. In a book meant to last generations, it is non-negotiable.

Final Review

When the work is complete, we meet to walk through the finished manuscript together. One round of revisions is included at no charge — because we want to make sure it is exactly right. Additional revision rounds beyond that are available at an agreed rate.

As part of her graduate publishing cohort at Portland State, Julie contributed editorial work to this Ooligan Press title, writing the teaching guide designed to bring the book into classrooms and spark meaningful conversations long after the launch. Getting the voice and framing of a guide like that right requires understanding the book deeply, and that's exactly where the work began.
We Gambled Our Future

María Cristina arrived with an extensive manuscript and four decades of lived experience to draw from. Julie worked with her through developmental editing and a heavy copyedit, finding the through line in a story that spans continents and cultures, sharpening the language at every level, and making sure that when the voice on the page spoke, it sounded unmistakably like its author. As María Cristina put it, Julie guided her through the entire journey with patience, never losing her voice.
A Lifetime in the Atmosphere

Stan came to us with one story he wanted to tell—his experience during the Cuban Missile Crisis—and what emerged was something much larger. Through a series of interviews, Daniel worked closely with Stan to draw out a full career's worth of stories, shaping the raw material of memory and conversation into a complete memoir. It's the kind of ghostwriting collaboration that requires deep listening as much as skilled writing, and the result is a book that sounds exactly like the man who lived it.
American Ice Cream

Kirsten Hendershot kept diaries during her 1960 summer in America as a Danish Girl Scout: careful, personal records that held the texture of that experience in real time. The editorial work here was about honoring what was already on the page while giving it a shape a reader could follow. That meant culling the diaries down to their essential moments, then working with Kirsten to write the connective tissue around them; the before and after that turns a collection of entries into a story with a beginning, a middle, and a place to land.
My Century In Motion

Dan arrived with an idea and a century of material to pull from. The ghostwriting process here meant sitting with that material — the memories, the anecdotes, the decades of accumulated experience — and finding the narrative thread that could carry a reader through all of it. The work was as much excavation as it was writing, and the result is a book that does justice to a life fully lived.
